Born in Bonn, Germany, Oliver grew up in Vienna, London, Rome, Paris, and Jerusalem. Graduating with a degree in Politics, Oliver moved to London to work as a speechwriter for a few months before heading to the States.

After working with Human Rights Watch and The Committee to Protect Journalists in New York, Oliver moved to Syria to pursue his interest in Arabic and started working as a contributor and copy editor for the Syria Report. Oliver has since worked in Yemen, covering terrorism, the refugee crisis, two civil wars, mass weddings and, most recently, the antigovernment protests.

Oliver’s work has been published in numerous newspapers and magazines, including TIME, The Wall Street Journal, The Telegraph, The Economist and Al Jazeera.

Oliver has been interviewed by the BBC World Service, Radio 5 Live, NPR, France24, CBC Canada and RTE Ireland, among others.
